this is with the Mitsbishi U48 ( another poor old model) playback has
many white daggers in picture, even on freeze frame. Recordings will
play fine on other machines. I've changed the coaxial cable which helped
for a while then reverted to problems. Also used the head cleaning tape
and played tapes for extended periods of time, problem persisted tho
sometimes clears for a while. Unit is inexpensive so servicing is not a
consideration, is head magnetized, any home fix I can try ?

Sounds like worn out video heads to me. Could also be
circuit problems. But if you wont have it professionally serviced, then
youre on your own.

took off the top , cleaned all tape contact surfaces...had the effect
to change degree of arrows from 30 degrees off vertical to horizontal,
disconnected coaxial cable from out jack, blew into out jack , problem
solved.

there should be a springy brass strip which discharges static off the
drum, check it is tight.
