I purchased a Mitsubishi 445 on ebay ( from California ) the machine is
set to channel 4 since the TV must be put on channel 4 to play ,
record.or get menus. There isn't any 3/4 switch on the machine, front or
back. Any way to get this vcr to channel 3 ? Stephen

Most Mitsubishi VCRs in the HS-U7xx or HS-U4xx series use a combination of
front panel controls to switch between channel 3 and 4 for the RF output.
The default is channel 3, so the original owner switched it to 4. On mine,
with the power turned *OFF*, turning the jog dial CCW while holding down
the SP/EP button returns the VCR to channel 3 RF output. I don't think the
U445 (U446) had a jog/shuttle, so you can either play with various other
buttons while holding the SP/EP button in. Try, with the power *OFF*, hitting
the rewind button while holding in the SP/EP button.

I assume you don't have a manual.

The manual for the very similar HS-U449 says:

"If needed, to return to channel 3: with the VCR turned OFF,
press CHANNEL DOWN and REC SPEED on the front panel at
the same time. CH3 will display."

Channel 4 is the same except CHANNEL UP.

Manual for U449 is at:

Good luck!

In your manual, look at the section titled "PLAYBACK", and the sub-section
titled "TV without Audio/Video Inputs." It's page 9 in the U449 manual, so
it should be similar in yours. In that section, it says:

"If needed, to return to channel 3: with the VCR turned OFF,
press CHANNEL DOWN and REC SPEED on the front panel at
the same time. CH3 will display."

Channel 4 is the same except CHANNEL UP.

Try it.

the 446 manual lacks any 3/4 information under playing a tape, however
the EP/SP channel down combination worked although it had the effect of
making the unit unresponsive to the remote control. I pushed various
button combinations, unplugged it and the remote worked again after
about five minutes. SD

I didn't say "...playing a tape." I said "PLAYBACK." Look in your
Table of Contents for "PLAYBACK." Read that *entire* section (of
which "playing a tape" is just a part") particularly the portion
titled "TV without Audio/Video Inputs."

making the unit unresponsive to the remote control.
You somehow changed it from "Remote A" to "Remote B." Holding the "REC SPEED"
while pressing "REWIND" will change it to "Remote B." Holding the "REC SPEED"
while pressing "FF" will return it to "Remote A." Again, DO THIS WITH THE VCR
POWERED *OFF*. See "ADVANCED FEATURES" in your manual.

Please, READ your manual - from the beginning to the end. Everything is in
there.

Setting Up Your VCR ............................. 12

TV without Audio/Video Inputs -

If your TV does not have separate audio/video inputs, then your
VCR will need to convert the VCRÕs picture to channel 3 or 4.
This is called the video channel. The factory has already selected
channel 3; however, if it is a broadcast channel in your area, then
you will need to change this to channel 4. To make this change:
set up
1 To choose channel 4: with the VCR power OFF, press
CHANNEL UP and REC SPEED on the front panel at the
same time. CH4 will display on the front panel and the VCR
will send signals on channel 4.
If needed, to return to channel 3: with the VCR turned OFF,
press CHANNEL DOWN and REC SPEED on the front panel at
the same time. CH3 will display.
2 Turn the VCR on by pressing POWER.

Ah, the antique HS-U510. Mitsubishi's contribution to the VCR industry's
lemon population in the '90s. My condolences.

the 510 is a dream compared to the model I have that requires each
channel to be tuned . Even tho I only needed to set it to channel "3" I
had an insurmountable problem : when set to "3" and put in the record
mode a faint horizontal line will move bottom to top even on the
broadcast signal ( not a tape ) I bought a number of old units for their
superior fine tuning capability. SD

Yeah, and a Vega might be preferred to a Yugo as well. That doesn't
make it good.

Methinks you didn't read it thoroughly enough.
