Hoping there is a 'genius' in this group. I have Cable, OTA, Converter
box for the OTA, and most importantly ONE VCR. I want to be able to
record from the box and of course, the cable. If you respond, please
mention the inputs and outputs...going from cable to vcr to box to tv
is not clear for me. Thanks

Do you use a cable STB or not? If so, what sort of outputs does it have
(RF channel 3/4, composite, S-video, component, HDMI, etc.) ?? Also,
what kind of inputs does your TV have? How many of each? Same for your VCR.

BY cable STB, I assume you mean RF? If so, I was using the rca cables
instead of RF, except for ant in. My TV has 2 tuners, with all the s-
vid, rca inputs. My vcr only has rca in and outs. Regardless, I have
been experimenting since I posted my message and now removed the rca
cables and am now trying the RF route, but as we know, that mode is
only temporary till June. In this rf setup, I was able to finally see
that I could record my digital channels...BUT, another snag appeared.
For this setup, I am not able to see my favorite CBS channel, and the
others are like stringy..not clear at all except for nbc and abc and
one spanish channel. I do have it connected to a rca combiner
splitter, which could be the culprit. On it, it says one IN and 2
outs, but the salesman told me that a combiner splitter could be
reversed and so that is what I did. BTW, when I had the BOX connected
via rca cables, I got excellent pictures, including CBS, but like I
said originally, I cannot get to record in that mode..for some reason.
I n my bedroom, I did set it up with rf via vcr and all is well,
recording and etc....but I do not have cable, so maybe that is why it
worked. Its more complicated in my living room setup. I hesitated to
mention this other layout I have in my TV, in order not to confuse
anyone...but other than the 2 tuners I mentioned earlier, I also have
what is listed as AV1,2,3,4...I have my vcr hooked up to AV2 and all
is well there. I have my cable to AV3, and all is well there, AV4 is
my DVD...so I had put the BOX to AV1 and like I said, excellent
pictures there via the rca cable setup..but cannot record, as I could
with AV2, and AV3.

No, a STB is a "set-top box" like a Motorola or a Scientific Atlanta
cable box. Some people plug their incoming cable TV directly into
their TV, and some use a cable company provided STB - and plug the
output of that box into their TV. I wondered how you do it, and if you
used a STB *exactly* what kind of outputs it has.

No component inputs? How many composite inputs? How many S-video inputs?
Does your digital converter box have analog pass-thru? I assume it has a
composite output.

Not knowing these answers, my best guess would be:

Cable STB RF out -> VCR RF in.
Digital converter box (CECB) composite out -> VCR composite (AV1) in.
Digital converter box (CECB) RF out -> TV RF in.
VCR composite output -> TV composite in.

Optional: Cable STB composite output -> VCR composite (AV2) input.

Might be easier if you posted the model numbers of your equipment, too.

Sorry, the STB is Scientific Atlanta cable box, the Converter box is
Philco TB100HH9 and the VCR is monural RCA VR 552. The converter can
also be used for analog. There are no component jacks on either of
these equipments, except for the TV...which is a projector Philips
55"" set and the STB. There are no S-video in either of the equipment
involved also, except for the STB. I finally got through to a tech
from Philco who called himself a 'pinhead'...a 'geek' and he gave me
the following to work on....OTA ant in to Box, Box out to a in 2 x1
splitter. Out of that splitter to vcr in, vcr out to TV rf in. The
other in on splitter to cable out.The box composite vid/audio out to
vcr composite in. I finally can see and record on chnl 3, but there
are a couple of shortcomings in the process...I have to leave the vcr
on and the remote of the Box does not work for me to return to a
previous channel as it did before., and my PIP is useless...which I
enjoyed with my analog setup. Thanks..
