I have just got a samsung time lapse vcr stv 7190. before I put it to
use I am wary of damaging the heads, due to the excessive time they
spend in contact with the tape.
I think it is prudent to use the best available to reduce wear. I have
some new D-VHS TDKs which also can be used on standard vhs decks, I
presume they are slightly superior to ordinary VHS or S-VHS tapes as
far as abrasiveness is concerned?
any thoughts welcomed.

we all know cheap video tape is often far more abrasive due to cheaper
materials and lack of uniformity in the surface. So this was just a
hunch, I imagined it was reasonable to assume that the higher the
grade of tape the better.
I recall trying a modded standard VHS cassette in an S-vhs deck after
drilling a small hole in case to fool the deck, to see if the actual
tape in SVHS cassettes was superior. it was! the pic with that
cassette was nowhere near as good, lots of comet tails.

For years TDK made some of the best videotape available. It was also some
of the most abrasive. The best tape is not necessarily the least abrasive.

That's nice, but is not related to your statement about abrasion. SVHS tape
has better high-frequency recording characteristics.
