I've recently acquired a Toshiba SD-K200U VHS/DVD player, and occasionally
the word "Hi Fi" flashes at about 10 o'clock on the screen.

How do I prevent that happeneing, please? I haven't been able to find a
manual for the product anywhere.

Presumably that message is telling you when the audio track switches from
linear to VHS-HiFi. If it flashes on and off, the tape being played is
tracking poorly or damaged.

There must be a setting in the menus to turn off on-screen messages. Does
the remote control have a "menu" or "Set-up" button?

That makes sense, as it's an old tape but of great nostalgic value. The
original recording was from some home video analog tapes circa 1996, so the
quality was never very good to begin with.

Yes, it does, but I'm unable to find any sort of menu item that removes the
"HI-FI" on-creen notification.

You might have to turn off _all_ onscreen messages in order to make it go
away ... at least, that's the way it was on my old JVC machines.

I would be happy to do so if there were any such menu options, but there
aren't. If there is a manual online anywhere for the Toshiba SD-K200U
VHS/DVD player, it would be most helpful, it seems.

Not familiar with this machine, but assuming it is do with a poor quality
stereo track, switching to mono playback may make it go away.
Another workaround may be to try a different video o/p. e.g. sometimes
the on-screen text only appears on the 'TV' o/p, not the 'Aux' o/p.

Thank you, I'd be willing to try mono audio if the choice were available,
but it's not.

There is an Aux. input, but only the one output.

I may have to replace this machine if I can't find an online manual for the
Toshiba SD-K200U VHS/DVD player. The goal is to transcribe VHS to DVD, and
the occasional "HI-FI" flashing on the screen would seriously mar the
results.

Have you actually tried it? I'd be very surprised if on-screen data is
recorded to disk.
Then again, we seem to be dealing with a machine rather lacking in basic
features....
Good Luck!

The repetitive on-screen "HI-FI" is indeed recorded to the mpeg2 file, as
it's a portion of the video output stream.

Thank you for the "we" ... I'm going to have to acquire a different machine,
it seems.

look at the 'audio'/'hifi'/'nicam' options. Often you have to change
them in a menu.I have an aiwa like this. also see if you can find a
buitton maked A.SEL or similar on the remote.
