I hava a good machine. Bought American Beauty @a yd. sale and it plays
"fast". It acts the way an older TV does with a bad vertical hold. It is
the tape. Anyone?
I tried everything. It's o.k. in slo mo but not in the "play mode". TIA.
E-mails welcome. John.

Look closely at the box and make sure it is U.S. NTSC. Sounds to me like
it's not.

Sounds like the OP is in the UK with the TIA comment.
So he could have gotten a french Secam format tape and is trying to play it on
his PAL machine.

NOTHING on the box? The box *has to* identify the tape as NTSC/color/etc.

I see TIA on Usenet all the time, not just by Europeans. It's even listed at:

Very, very unusual. Are you sure it's not a counterfeit?

[BTW, it's NTSC.]

Could be a tape made for overseas viewing, like a tourist video. When
browsing thru Zions National Parks visitor center in souther Utah, i found
many pal and secam tapes meant for the tourists to purchase.

The edge of the tape which contains the control track may be creased or
otherwise damaged. Or the stationary control head on your deck may be
dirty enough so that it can't read the track on your tape.

Open the front window of the cassette and check if there is any damage.
Clean your heads - ALL of them.

Mike; It's not that. I put several other VHS cassettes in and they
played fine. But this one "hops" all the time. You think maybe it's just
a defect from the factory? I bought it at a yard sale (like new). First
one I ever had that "hopped" vertically. And I've had some bad tapes.
I'd like to watch it, but I'm not gonna' get mental about it. <g>

Its very possible the the control track , while not physically damaged by a
vcr, was somehow demagnetized partially by someone sitting the tape near a
speaker or on top of an unsheilded TV set.

If you arent too far from me, and can mail it media mail or whatever to me in
Utah and i can run it thru my pro decks and a TBC and see if i can copy it for
you.

GMAN: Thanks for the offer but I threw it out. It only set me back .50,
so it wasn't worth the aggravation. Beside that, I'm on the East Coast.

OK, anyways , offer stands if you ever need any help. I am also sure someone on
the east coast would help out too if the need arises.

I still think your tape may have been partially demagentized somehow by the
original owner.
