Have had two VHS tapes ruined in Phillips VCR in the last two months. The
actual tapes get hooked up in the machine. The machine does rewind at very
high speed and I am wondering if this could be a factor or could the quality
of the tapes be suspect OR do I need a new VCR.Thanks for any help.

Only way to see what's going on exactly, is to take the top off so you
can see where the tape damage is being done (preferably with a "junk"
tape). My Mitsu rewinds at high speeds as well, but doesn't ruin tapes.

I bought a Toshiba W522 at a thrift shop for $3. It has true 1-minute
rewind, but gets into and out of high speed mode gently, creating
perfect winds with no stress on the tape.

And unlike dedicated VHS rewinders costing much more, the Toshiba has
a Hi-Fi VCR feature too. :)

It really comes in handy now, speaking of Mitsu, because my HS-U61
doesn't seem to have any braking on tapes in RR and FF. Seems to hit
the end at full clip just like a stop and pop rewinder. It's a
gruesome sound when it's a valuable tape from the collection.

But the Toshiba is a dream solution for your rewind problems and
Goodwill is selling VCRs like that for $3-$4.

I have run a cleaning tape and although this does not affect the speed
,things appear to be smoother and not so noisy now.Keeping fingers crossed.

take David's advice. you need to see what happens. pòst a vid of the
problem to you tube if you need extra help.
if this philips uses a turbo deck, likely the brakes and the pulse
mech need repairing.
