Discussion:
OT: PVR output to a USB holding device of some kind? Or, at least, input/out from/to VCR?
(too old to reply)

I've been trying to find an ng that talks about PVRs but so far,
nothing. Was hoping someone here might know. I have a Scientific
Atlanta Explorer 8300. On the front it seems to have some sort of USB
port. I don't know, however, whether it is input or output.

I have the PVR but my folks, who live on a different floor, have a DVD
player. Is there some way to get output to them that doesn't involve
recording from PVR to DVD recorder then playing DVD on their player?

Was hoping that USB, if it was for output, could be used somehow.
Anyone know?

Thanks. :oD

The USB input on the front panel probably is not active. It is designated in
the manual as "...reserved for future use..."

(Page 23 in the manual paging systen and not in the PDF numbering
system <d'uh on my part> <g>.)

Thanks! I never thought to look for the manual. Must get into the
habit of doing that. Still in old-style thinking that whatever came
in box is all I get <sigh>!

Yeah, thought of that, but the hassle of recording to VCR is that I
only have 1 VCR now, with the advent of the DVD recorder that I
bought. It would mean each time copying to VCR on mine, unhooking
machine, then trudging up it and hooking up there and then unooking at
end and bringing back down. Pain in the neck ... <g>

But I guess it's a possible solution.

Darn.

btw, what page is that on. I looked for that by searching for various
words and nothing came up. USB didn't produce any results. Just
curious to see the actual reference.

thanks. :)

Uh, that section tells me that the audio and video would be sent on those
audio and video outputs. Tells me they can be hooked to *any* A/V input,
not just for VCR recording. Right? Hook them up to your folks' A/V input.
Since they are on a different floor, I'd suggest good cables and a A/V
amplifier. Or use an RF modulator and RG6 cable. Or find one of those
nifty A/V senders. Point being, since the signal is on the A/V outputs,
there are many ways to get it to your folks.

The page that shows the front panel and describes each item on the
front panel. Or, page 2 of:

<lol> Sorry, wasn't clear. We're in an APARTMENT BUILDING. I'm on
the 2nd floor, they're on the 7th. Can you imagine the length of
cable I'd have to use, if this were even possible, that I'd then have
to snake down my hallway past everyone else's apartment, through to
the stairwell, up the stairwell to the 7th floor, then all the way
down eveyrone's apartments to theirs on the 7th (forgot to think of
this, drilling a hole through both reinforced front doors) and then
hooking up to their DVD player??? <rofl> Sorry I wasn't clear on
that. But it's not an option to hook up my PVR to their DVD player!!

And with only 1 VCR, that's not feasible either. Best situation
would be a small, removable device. Since both the PVR and DVD
players have the audio/video jacks, wouldn't it be neat if there was a
small handheld device that could do the trick, since USB seems to be
out. I guess it was too much to hope for.

Still, I see it now. Page 2 in the manual clearly states that this
is, indeed reserved for future use. I think that a call to my cable
service provider is still in order now that I know more about my
machine.

Thanks! Much appreciated. The manual really helps. I didn't get
anything like it with the machine.

Cheers. :)

Oh, just a *minor* clarification. ;)

Easiest solution would be for *you* to get a cheap DVD recorder and
burn DVDs that are compatible with their DVD player. Or...move in with
them.
